On Wednesday mornings, we welcome residents into the Gipsyville Library for Coffee & Chat sessions, accompanied with some warm brews and plenty of biscuits. This is a place where conversations flow and friendships grow-but these sessions aren’t just about sharing a cuppa; they’re about involving everyone in a programme of activities that inspire ideas and invite discussion.

“The events we attend are all interesting and informative. I enjoy the weekly meetings with friends. It is part of my social life now. Trips to the theatre and other events I would NOT normally attend on my own. The community-based events are important to me too as it’s all about involving everyone and inclusion.”

That sense of inclusion and connection shines through in everything the group does. Recently, four residents took part in How We Moved, a moving dance theatre production choreographed by Holly Gibbs of Dance In Company. The performance celebrated real-life stories from the community, highlighting how people navigate their journeys through life. For those involved, it was a chance to be part of something bigger, to see their experiences reflected on stage and celebrated through the art of dance.

The group also makes regular trips beyond the library walls. Visits to Humber Street Gallery, Hull Truck Theatre, Ferens Art Gallery, Back To Ours, and Freedom Festival open doors to new experiences and sparks fresh ideas. These outings help bring the city’s cultural life right into the heart of Gipsyville Coffee & Chat.

One of the residents mentioned how the annual Gipsyville Christmas Parade is their favourite event. They enjoyed “how very much the community were involved and the children really enjoyed it too”. The 2024 parade included a communal sing-song, Apus Production’s Goby Fish lighting the way and hot chocolates all round.

One of the greatest outcomes has been seeing the community take the lead. Residents now run their own art sessions on Saturdays and have set up a thriving weekly knit and natter group. These activities show how confidence has grown – people feel empowered to organise, create, and share with one another.

There’s a strong pride in this community. Residents are not only enjoying opportunities to learn and connect, but also finding ways to shout about their place and celebrate it with creativity.

With each session, trip, and project, Gipsyville Library is proving that creativity and conversation can spark something powerful – a stronger, more connected community.
