Creative learning for curious minds

We believe creativity is for life, not just for artists. Our adult learning offer includes workshops, taster sessions and classes designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage conversation. These activities are shaped by what our visitors and communities tell us they want, complementing the wider cultural offer across the city. Many of our OPEN House sessions are open to adult learners too, offering opportunities to learn new skills, share ideas and connect with others. Our in-gallery conversation cards invite visitors to look at artworks from new perspectives, encouraging reflection, discussion and creative thinking in a relaxed, welcoming way.

OPEN House

OPEN House is Humber Street Gallery’s workshop series, designed to encourage the sharing of ideas and practice-led learning. Workshops are exploratory, engaging and often hands-on, offering space to experiment, perform, talk, share skills or combine these approaches. Led by a diverse range of invited artists from different practices, backgrounds and geographies, OPEN House takes place in the gallery or online, making it accessible to artists wherever they are.

Cultural conversations

Artist Talks

Our Artist Talks programme offers artists the chance to hear directly from peers, both local and international. These events are an opportunity to gain insight into different practices, processes and experiences, as well as to connect with other creatives. For artists, attending a talk is not only about listening, but about exchanging ideas, building networks and finding inspiration for their own work.

Workshops

We run creative workshops and activities that bring people together to share ideas, try new things and explore contemporary art. These sessions prioritise participation, conversation and collaboration.

Our approach to lifelong learning

Our approach to learning is rooted in accessibility, collaboration and creativity. We believe that everyone should have the chance to explore, enjoy and develop through creative activity, regardless of background or experience. Our adult learning programmes respond to the needs and interests of our visitors and communities, offering meaningful ways to connect with contemporary art and ideas.

We focus on co-creation, working with participants to shape what learning looks like, whether that’s through artist-led workshops, conversations in the gallery or creative sessions in community spaces. By working with local partners, we ensure our programmes reach people who might not usually engage with the arts, offering opportunities that are relevant and rewarding.

Learning at Humber Street Gallery is about more than developing new skills. It’s about confidence, connection and curiosity. Creating space for people to think, make and grow together in a way that feels open, welcoming and genuinely transformative.
