Working together to imagine new possibilities

At Humber Street Gallery, we believe art can transform how we see ourselves, our city and our future. Our work with communities is never surface-level. It is about trust, respect and long-term collaboration. Together, we create bold and meaningful projects that reflect the spirit of Hull while opening up new ways of thinking and being. From Gipsyville to other neighbourhoods, we listen, respond and work side by side with residents. The result is art that feels authentic, relevant and alive with the voices of the people it belongs to.

Artists in residence

We place artists in community settings to work alongside residents. Their practice is shaped by local voices, leading to creative outcomes that grow from genuine exchange and collaboration.

Guest speakers, tours, visits and talks

We connect communities with inspiring artists, cultural spaces and creative voices through visits, talks and events. These experiences spark curiosity and encourage fresh perspectives.

Our approach to co-creation

For us, co-creation is not a method, it is a mindset. Rooted in Hull’s radical spirit, it is about working with communities to imagine and make something new together. Co-creation is thoughtful, responsive and grounded in three elements: community, collaboration and context. It values lived experience and local knowledge, with everyone’s voice mattering equally. Collaboration means shared responsibility and mutual respect, where outcomes are shaped by dialogue and trust. Context ensures each project is rooted in place, shaped by its unique histories and culture. Through co-creation, contemporary art becomes something not only seen, but lived and shared.

Gipsyville Coffee & Chat

Featured story

On Wednesday mornings, we welcome residents into the Gipsyville Library for Coffee & Chat sessions, accompanied with some warm brews and plenty of biscuits. This is a place where conversations flow and friendships grow-but these sessions aren’t just about sharing a cuppa; they’re about involving everyone in a programme of activities that inspire ideas and invite discussion.
